8 p.m. on a Wednesday.
There is not a single soul in sight.
The only noises are crickets and maybe a car once every half an hour driving by.
There are two stop lights, one grocery store, a handful of restaurants (and by restaurants I mean Subway and Burger King) and every stranger is so nice you’ll want to punch them/hug them.
No, I’m not describing a horror movie.
Time stops in small town Wisconsin. It’s been a great week so far- no traffic, old friends and family time and almost no interaction with any other humans except for the Culvers drive-thru (have you been to Culvers? No? Go now). I’ve enjoyed the past week so much because I feel like for the first time I’m breathing at a normal rate.
It’s comforting to know where I’m from. It holds memories of a simpler time. Talking to boyfriends for five hours on the phone, being out till 1 AM sitting around a fire, driving aimlessly for hours on country roads- I didn’t have a single care in the world. I miss not worrying about everything 24/7. I miss the days where I didn’t have to do anything for an entire day. I miss sitting on my friend Katie’s trampoline with my best friends, staring up at the sky and wondering where we would all be in five years.
And now we’re here, seven years later. I have a friend getting married this week, another one a baby just arrived, another one a baby soon arriving…time has passed, our lives have changed, yet nothing has changed.
These overalls bring me back to my childhood, back to when everything was fun and easy. I’m so happy they’re back in style.
